Course Background

The first James Cook Regional Anaesthesia Course was held in April 2009 and organised by The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough in conjunction with the University of Durham utilising the university facilities which include, three-dimensional anatomical projection on live models and live demonstrations of nerves and landmarks on dissected cadavers. It has one of the biggest base of facilities gathering many experts from all around the world as UK, Ireland, France, Egypt, Canada, USA and Lebanon...etc.

It is recognised and supported by The Royal College of Anaesthetists and has been recognised by ESRA examination board for the ESRA Diploma. It restricts its number of delegates to 80 per course and has attracted delegates from all over the world. It was the first specific regional anaesthesia course to accept posters in the UK and award The James Cook Medal of Honor with a honorarium financial award to the best poster submitted. The course is run every year and continues to develop based on the feedback provided by the delegates.

It runs over two days and includes the following:

  • Demonstration of relevant anatomy to regional anaesthetists on cadavers by Anatomy Lecturers at York University
  • Small group work teaching (4-5 delegates per instructor)
  • Side by side cadaveric learning and scanning on volunteers
  • Nerves, FAST, FATE, gastric, lungs and pleura scanning
  • Hands-on learning of needle techniques and catheters on phantoms
  • Opportunity to discuss tips and tricks with international experts in ultrasound regional anaesthesia

We acknowledge it is a long 2 day course but we hope that you would find the course fun and enjoy the two days and the social gathering at the gala dinner. Due to the success of the course, we are very proud to be the only UK UGRA course that has been invited to deliver courses abroad and we plan to deliver overseas courses every other year.
